To me, it's just an okay book. Although Kevin is excellent at explaining each topic he presents. But I didn't like the book because of the topics covered. When learning a new tool, I like to see a project that is built up over several chapters. As a chapter introduces new features, it add's those features to the project, or refactors the code to make use of those features.
Kevin's book set out to be a generic book about .net that covered many features, from both a C# and VB point of view. This is fine if you're doing your initial investigation of dotnet. But that causes a couple problems for me. First, topics are not covered due to space limitations since both languages are covered. Second, I have to spend time skipping around to find the pieces I want to learn.
This book is more of a generic starters guide. Not something I felt comfortable enough after reading I was ready to try a project on my own.
>Is Kevin McNeish's "NET for VFP Developers" book still regarded as good for a beginner? I think it's free online these days.
