It will -1 if nothing has been selected in the ListBox ... you can also set it to -1 initially.

May I also ask you how to best use the Help from IDE? I do see SelectedIndex property, but when I highlight it in code and press F1 it gives me some unrelated page about using the designer. And therefore so far I was always ending googling for the answer...
If it's not broken, fix it until it is.
