There are several states with no income tax, in addition to the ones you mention -- Washington, Nevada, South Dakota, Wyoming, and Alaska. Plus New Hampshire is the same as Tennessee, no income tax other than on dividends and interest income.

Whatever you do, don't move to New York or Connecticut. I don't imagine there's much danger of that anyway ;-)

>I gotta agree with Tamar on this one. I live in Tennessee, home of the free and the less taxed. We don't have a state income tax, which means my income can be less than someone in say, Ohio, and yet be more. I recently was in Ohio, doing consulting work, and once I received payment for services rendered, it was less than I would have made if I had worked on the program remotely, even though the fee was considerably more - communists!

>I've been planning to retire to Colorado within the next 5 years, but I may have to keep dual residency to afford it! Tennessee is one of a handful of states that don't try to eat their citizens via ANOTHER income tax. I believe Texas and Florida are also in this. The more I see of government, the more I agree with Milton Freidman's idea "If you put the federal government in charge of the Sahara Desert, in 5 years there'd be a shortage of sand."

>>Yep, in a number of ways. First, you can choose to live somewhere else and pay taxes there instead.
>>
>>Second, you get to vote for the people who set the taxes.
>>
>>Third, if you think the taxes are too high or being spent poorly, you can try to convince others and make your vote go farther.
