I'm sure he does feel pain - big time. And the death toll, apparently, would be much higher but for the marvellous capabiities to evacuate/treat injuries that now exists.
But I do hope that in his memoirs he admits that he thought it would be a cakewalk based on advice supplied. I'm sure it wasn't only Cheney/Wolfowitz and the cabal who felt that way.
