I am not sure about the first one, either. I saw the second one the same way you did and for sure you are right about #3. The whole plot was triggered by the money and I don't think we even knew the characters who wound up with it, other than that they were Mexicans who heisted it at the motel.

If you are a Coen brothers fan, weren't some scenes very similar to ones in "Blood Simple" and others to scenes in "Raising Arizona"? Not excessively but I would have recognized it as one of their movies even if I didn't know.

Cormac McCarthy's next book, "The Road", is also being made into a movie and is even bleaker than this one.
