I can vouch for SubText - I've used SubText for a long time before I wrote my own engine. SubText is great out of the box and it's pretty good for code customization, although that gets complex pretty quickly due to excessive templating.

This is true of most Blog engines and it makes it easy to customize the layout and add components, but for me it was getting too time consuming to add a host of custom features. In the end I'm glad I wrote my own because now making either layout or code changes is exremely quick.

The trade offs of a generic system vs. a custom application that's actually designed for your exact needs. <g>

Another engine to check out is DasBlog... also XML based (which seems a little sketchy since you can't easily query across those files...)
