IIRC Windows 2000 Server had issues with mapped connections going inactive after a period of inactivity and I think there was a server hotfix for it. It's been several years since I had to deal with it.
You would have to check microsoft site for the message you get in explorer when the mapped connection is inactive or whatever the exact message was.
