Rule # 0: Give your customers what they want.

I fully understand, and mostly agree with the so-called UI guidelines on this topic. However, there are quite a few circumstances where blinking is highly desirable behaviour.

Human brains are hard-wired to notice changes in an otherwise static visual field. This is crucial when responding to alert, alarm, or emergency conditions. It's much easier and faster to pick an alarm condition out of a screen full of information if its icon, label etc. starts blinking. In some industries, timely response to alarms can save a *lot* of money, or in the case of safety alarms, prevent injury or deaths.

Emergency vehicle lights blink as well - that is not just coincidence or some tradition.

IIRC the OP's employer is "AFRL" or the Air Force Research Labs, so it seems reasonable that what he's working on could legitimately require the benefits of UI blinking.

If you, or anyone else are so dead-set against blinking, you could start by turning off the blinking of the cursor in your Word docs < g >
