When setting up, server on local machine, connection via tcp/ip (and not shared memory) is there any way around having the sql server browser started as a service ?

Have already added ports 1433 tcpip, 1344 upd local network to the firewall, but I cannot have my vs2008 connect to the AdventureWorks database without first starting the 'sql server browser' service
