In addition to what Craig said, a very impt tool in your toolbox is Ildasm. Supplied with VS. It allows you to see the Il code that VS generates from your source.
You can see some things such as amount of boxing/unboxing occurring that greatly affect performance, and you probably didn't know was occurring.
