Don't remember if it was installed by default, but it is available for downloading.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=06616212-0356-46A0-8DA2-EEBC53A68034
(got that by googling Northwind database SQL)

Mine is in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data
though AdventureWorks is the new demo database.

>>Hi, Peter.
>>
>>>I finally decided to learn this .net stuff. I have some trainig videos from AppDev and was wondering if I should download VS2005 or VS2008 from MSDN?
>>>is the IDE look and feel similar enough so that the bloody begoinner can follow the videos (written for 2005) without getting confued when using VS208
>>
>>There is almost no reason to use VS 2005 now. Even is you were already developing with VS 2005, you can keep up doing the same work (maybe framework 2.0 or 3.0 applications) with better tools. There are very little things that are still not supported in VS 2008, like Biztalk development (which will be soon available).
>>
>>If are about to start, go VS 2008 and start working with the .NET 3.5 framework, which is just the 2.0 runtime with newer or updated libraries.
>>
>>Best luck!
>VS2008 installed SQLServer 2005 express I think
>I am looking for the ubiquitous n orthwind data base. where is it?
>I only find the one in VFP

Charles Hankey

Though a good deal is too strange to be believed, nothing is too strange to have happened.
- Thomas Hardy

Half the harm that is done in this world is due to people who want to feel important. They don't mean to do harm-- but the harm does not interest them. Or they do not see it, or they justify it because they are absorbed in the endless struggle to think well of themselves.

-- T. S. Eliot
Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for lunch.
Liberty is a well-armed sheep contesting the vote.
- Ben Franklin

Pardon him, Theodotus. He is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature.
