Go with Visual Studio 2008 all the way.
You can select which .NET support library to target using VS2008 ( 1.1 , 2.0 , 3.0 or 3.5 ).

a great video training option is www.LearnVisualStudio.Net

A free option:

Kevin Macneish's ".NET for VFP people" book is not published on www.FoxCentral.Net

Although its outdated it does provide a foundation of the concepts that still underpin the entire .NET framework. All the examples still work.

http://foxcentral.net/microsoft/NETforVFPDevelopers.htm

Once you become an intermediate or advanced .NET developer the IDesign.Net books written by people such as Michele Leroux Bustamante become the definitive guide to superlative software design.

If you master the concepts in an IDesign.Net book you'll be a real hardcore "software engineer" :)

Have Fun!

Dave.
