Yupp. Some trouble reported *seen* for straight prots of fpw code, not checked them personally.

>- Can I run VFP applications which needs runtime files in Vista 64 bit?
Yupp - when you take care of VISTA security so it would run under 32 Bit

>- Does anyone know how http://www.dbase.com/ works with Vista 64 bit?
Was disappointed of dbase capabilities about 4 years ago - check first...

>I have started from FoxBase and can say that knows xBase from top to toe and really doesn't want to learn new language anymore and I think that I'm too old to .NET show so thats why I'm looking for dBase. Do you know if dBase is for anything? Also it might be so that my next move is Borland as I'm very frustrated to te whole picture of VFP and MS sadly killing it. After the whole VFP "show" I'm so full of MS and my trust to MS is so low (minus degrees) that now I think is time to think new figures. Have you any suggestions?

>a) Something quite easy or even very easy to learn
Python, as dev is via very similar interpreter/p-compiler couple and the sytax is well thought out

>b) Powerful
Python "batteries included" approach is very powerful - and C expandable if the need arises. More packages than for vfp IMHO.

>c) good support to control Windows and windows pheripherals directly (f.ex. If I want to do large database application or
COM and .Net support on similar level as vfp

>d) Support Pocket PCs and similiar (not mandatory but expand nicely possibilities)
In theory Python could do that, but version numbers differ - I would not count on Python for that.
Maybe look at xHarbour - similar to clipper.

>e) Add-ons, generators, etc.
MS products have the best add-ons IMHO.

>f) Long, long lifetime (not killed by some stupid Nerd who thinks only his own pockets)
Python is open source with a relatively large following
Java has IMHO the greatest following in open source, but asks for another developer mindset

>h) huh huh, is it now time? to say "good bye my dear fellow foxpro it's farewell time. You served well and good. You could have still long time left but because of reasons that has only small connections to the reality you was decided to kill". Sad sad thing but what a small individual can do anymore than funeral oration - so bye bye the foxed future."

I am still hoping for Etec to finish vfp compatibility necessary for biz and database tier (especially SQL implementation) but try to do a few jobs in python and java to keep muscle between the ears toned - maybe look at xHarbour or similar approaches again, and dabo in python or Strataframe in .net - I haven't found a comparable fwk in java yet ...

regards
