By today's standards, the average person was prejudiced, if not a racist. While he believed in slavery, history has distorted his views. He broke the law and instituted schools for slaves and he even adopted a black child which during his time was unheard of. He knew slavery was going to end eventually and was concerned for the future of slaves. You may find this interesting (I hope you read it):
