By your own admission, the native Amricans had no concept of property or ownership. So they would have had no idea just what it was that the first "settlers" were up to.
Even in treaties here (Canada) the natives interpreted "the Crown" - which was Queen Victoria at the time - as 'the lady with the big hat'.
In other words, the natives were on a completely different wavelength than the settlers/negotiators.
