Sounds like the file server or the client software is truncating the CDX to just the header record. I just tried and an empty CDX is 3K, so whatever is truncating it is not doing it in any sensible way.
I have heard of problem with Novell client software in certain version that corrupt files. The recommendation was always either upgrade teh Novell client software or use the Win95 client software.
