This rings a tiny bell... maybe wrong. But... wasn't 8k the limit for the length of a single compiled line? So a thing like that would be an implicit text-endtext or other assignment statement, which should compile within 8k. As practically all of it is a single literal, I assume nothing gets tokenized or compressed in any way, so 8k source roughly gets 8k object code. Could this be it?
