>It is not the character length it is set to 10 all that the report shows is correct numbers for individual records but on the total it shows four asterisk **** as the total I looked for a place to change the format but I do not see where this property might be.

It's not a format property that you can set. The most likely cause is the physical display width for the totals field. It is not wide enough to fully display the total for that field. You need to widen the field.
