Here's an example of what the French have been up to since 1999:

Since then, and for the first time in the car history, emissions from particulate filter-equipped diesel vehicles have declined to nearly zero.And the "latest" (I think that's the word I used ;-) ) from Mercedez and the French manufacturers is even better.
