I have it on good authority that some calculation routines I wrote in 1988 in FoxBase+ are still being used at the heart of a mission-critical insurance accounting application (20 years!).

I'm not surprised. IMHO over the next few years we'll discover that there is more of this than we ever believed. It'll declare itself as cloud computing/software-as-a-service become more accepted by business that finally perceives a reason to change. But you have to laugh- look up "cloud computing" on wikipedia and read the 3rd sentence. ;-)
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
