Just to clarify things:

For capturing big pictures, specially for photos, the best result will come from JPEGs. JPEGs loose quality, but for big images, this will not be noticeable.

For form capturing, as in forms we usually have few colors, PNGs offer really great results, sometimes smaller than JPEGs, keeping the exact quality as the original.

For images of up to 20x20, specially for buttons, I use BMPs only. Gifs are good too, but for buttons they don't work nice, and for small image sizes, as GIFs contain a header that contains info abut the image colors.

TIFFs I use more for multiframe images
