More investigation...

This is evidently a VFP 3 bug, I found a KB doc on it. "Dithered" colors do not show up in backgrounds at run-time for many objects. The colors I'm trying to use must be "dithered," I guess. I have VFP 5 coming any day, perhaps this will fix the problem.
