What a deja vu... I've had that already (but can't really remember whether it was in Hungarian or English). You ask a native, get the answer, it doesn't look right, you ask around, see why it was wrong, but still don't changed because you think the guy wouldn't like being second-guessed.

Eventually the thing gets fixed when a tester points out that the phrase is awkward. So another native has to point it out, independently. And you can always chalk it off to the first guy not quite having understood what you asked (which may even be true, who knows).
