>I'm using a Samsung SyncMaster 225BW LCD Monitor connected to an analog VGA card. I'm running it at its native 1680x1050 resolution. The VGA card readily supports this resolution and 32 bit colour, but it is more than 5 years old.

In addition to Tracy's comment on conversion loss: unless that video card was for CAD work I guess signal quality at resolutions that high (ssen from standards back then) might generate a weak signal, while resolutions more in line with 1152*864 might still produce adequate signal.

Fanless digital non-game cards are cheap, but if you have still some 21 CRC's sitting along I'd add the card for those situations you need a second/third monitor and the fire up the old screen. I am guessing you are not sitting in a tiny cubicle...
