I never saw that switch before. So, when I press it, I saw that my laptop was able to find the networks around me. So, once I entered the security key, it was able to connect to the Internet.

IMO those switches are a nice security feature. They let you turn off the wireless in those environments where you're connected via a wire, and having the wireless still enabled would just be a potential vulnerability.
