this is exactly what i did in the end. formatted the disk, much quicker than deleting the files, and copied over the zip file.
It was a fat32 disk, and i had no option of changing that on the format options. i am hesitant about SP1 right now, going to wait a while, heard about the file handing improvements but waiting to see what was broken to get these:)
