In CursorAdapter you can use the latest features for the tables, while with SPT you're using ODBC Driver for VFP that was last updated for VFP6.
Though there was some recent thread about trying different ODBC driver working with VFP tables...

CursorAdapter hides some complexity from you and you can design same CA classes for different backends with much more ease.
