Hi Neil,

sorry for beeing late, but a I've deleted yeasterdays message.

In principle I consider KISS for shorthand decicions. For longhand it's normaly wrong.

Just to give you examples

You now about rouge waves. The construction of ships was to weak because the modell used to simulate waves doesn't predict them, it was to simple. The sailors could hardly tell, normaly the ship was lost.

The simple solution is normaly wrong over long times. One have to think it trough.

Think on river flooding. An area was flooded, the river was at 10m. Would you build the embankment so that it resists 10m?

There are simple equations in the world of electricity. For example Ohms law. This is U/(RI)=const? No it is not. A important part of it is: "if temperature (and tension) are constant". If you don't respect this you may run in big trouble.

Normaly, if you do a closer look to the things that look like a straight line you will figure out that you on a section of a ex. All is fine as long as you never leaver the area where you do you assumptions. But one never know who uses something later and doesn't respect those limitations.

This is the same with your assumption "GETENV("USERPROFILE") + "\DESKTOP\"". It's fine if you code for yourself or in an environment where you can controll the settings. Anything else is wrong.

IOW: Programming is the art of fixing problems, that would not arise, if the programmer was the user too.

It is something that I try to apply to all things that I do, and I also think it is a good principle for all to follow.
