I think "they" want the fight because it's a 'button' issue, much like abortion and illegal immigration, and "they" bring it out when there are issues that "they" don't want examined to closely.

"We need to do something about (insert big issue here)"

"Look! There's same-sex marriage going on over there!" (pointing)

I'm still waiting for someone to explain to me how letting two very dear friends of mine (who've been in a monogamous homosexual relationship for nearly 20 years) get married threatens my marriage.
