I'm sure I'm over simplifying it, but wouldn't it take something longer to reach a destination in one direction if it is already moving in another? Isn't that one of the basic premises to the theory of relativity? Or the Doppler Affect? Or something more basic like throwing an apple backwards out of the back of a pickup truck. It tends to land tumbling and scattering in the same direction the truck is moving. Of course, I'm not a Grand Theorist, so maybe I'm wrong.
