He arrived on site and the vehicle was ready for him and he saw the troops and the line, and he chose not to ride (don't think it made the General very happy because he had to walk too then).

Of course, the troops have to stand at attention the entire time so the long walk (instead of the ride) means they are out there standing at attention that much longer.
