>I have been reading a book called "The Looming Tower", which traces the forces in the Arab world that led to 9/11. There is quite a bit of coverage of Mohammed bin Laden, Osama's father. He was sort of a Horatio Alger story, a man who started with nothing and became very rich in the construction business, largely due to close ties he formed with the Saudi royal family. I knew he had 54 children by 22 wives (officially). I also knew he was known to be a devout Muslim. What I didn't know is that Islamic law allows a man only four wives at once (only? <g>) and that a divorce is as simple as the man saying "I divorce you." Mohammed bin Laden the pious Muslim married innumerable "wives" in the afternoon and divorced them by nightfall.

A while back there was a debate in Iran about the use of "chastity houses". Basically these were places that prostitutes could marry a man for a couple hours, do their business, and then the man would divorce them. Thus remaining within the rules of Islamic law.

The Looming Tower is a fantastic book.
