We have Sql server express set up on a server and some users accessing it from another server via a third party application, using ODBC

They are getting intermittent error as:
ODBC Sql Server Driver TCP/IP Sockets General Network Error
Communication Link Failure

I'd apprciate any suggestions as to where to look to correct, if it is a problem related to Sql SErver.
Are there any settings on SQl SErver I should be looking at ?
