Pretty soon all public Internet traffic is going to have to be encrypted just to make sure that what you receive is actually what a site or content provider wants to send you. Deep packet inspection and on-the-fly modification of what you're getting is fairly troubling. You have no way of knowing that what you're getting is different from what your content provider is trying to send you.

Be assured your ISP has at least considered doing this and is watching this case closely.

The ironic thing is, that when more and more sites and providers start insisting on SSL it'll make the job of various national spy and surveillance organizations that much harder. It wouldn't surprise me if, behind the scenes, CSIS, NSA et. al. are slapping ISPs upside the head.
