It is urgent to do something about it, for example:
Promote public transportation. Over here we have a lot of that, but I understand that the U.S. is under-served in this respect.
Do some walking, when you don't need to go far. 'Tis good for your tummy, too.
Do research on alternative energy sources. For example, I heard something about the U.S. government giving great subsidies (tax discounts, I think it was) to oil companies; that money would be much better spent in researching and promoting alternative energy.
Use (and promote) equipment that uses less energy - especially fluorescent light bulbs. (Part of the electrical energy produced uses petroleum; using less energy would reduce the pressure on the petroleum reserves.)
Probably a few additional things might be added to this list. On the other hand, this is a mix of things that can be done on a personal level, and things that require government intervention.
