one point I have not seen mentioned here: if you need to access form different locations (spoken from LAN POV)
forget SourceSafe. Neither the Shadowing nor direct access via telephone line can be said to work well.

USe SourceSafe ONLY if all your dev sit on the same LAN and make one guy comfortable with analyzing the "database", which in SourceSafe's case are just a bunch of files. SourceOffsite was better, but if you have the need for such access, get another tool from start.
