My check for wastewater treatment etc went to the wrong address and came back to me - so I finally saw who's issuing what to whom. It's not even the bank (or credit union, in my case), it's yet another middlem...person, another shop specialized in printing checks and sending them in bulk.
Maybe for some very frequent cases there's some sort of direct transaction, b2b style, almost as if they were using computers, but I'm not holding my breath. They all just enjoy holding on to our money for a day or two longer.
