Uh... There are critiques aplenty, as usual... :)
And while it is not in the final release, the framework has taken quite a long period and been shaped by community feedback.
Some of the standard alternatives in the ORM space include NHibernate (which is quite madure and comes from old Java Hibernate), LBLGen Pro, Ibatis and others. I would recommend taking a look at NHibernate (but I would still pay attention to the Entity Fx).
