Using a a well defined interface is better, and the COM components I mentioned are easier in that regard. The other alternative might be a TP library, but unless you already know what you will need this decision is difficult. You might read a bit on west-wind: for bare TCP/IP, HTTP, SOAP and so on Rick has IMHO nice libraries. The thing missing when I built my stuff mainly was security related stuff (client certificates, FTPS, java-flavored WS practices) but either COM components or his libraries will help build code that is easier to maintain.
