We've been using Skype since late 2006. Overall we've been pretty happy with it even on our crappy wireless broadband connection.

It works through your computer sound card, so you do need to be near the computer.

We've also subscribed to MagicJack http://www.magicjack.com/2/?mid=304185. This is a device that hooks to a USB port that you then hook your regular telephone into (or jump to your household wiring like we did). Works very well. Still cheap, and it gives you a local phone number for people to call.
