That does happen - far too many times with children playing with a weapon that wasn't secured properly.
As soon as we had a child in our house, most of the guns were unloaded and locked in a gun cabinet or safes in various parts of the house.
One pistol is in the bedroom with a locked trigger guard and ammo in another drawer. Not immediate access but better than nothing for protection.
Since I make my own ammunition, all powder is locked away as well (a pound size can of gunpowder makes a suprising blast if ignited (did that to dispose of a questionable can years ago - WHOOSH!! - whish I had video).
