What kind of database products do the big web sites use?

Currently we use SQL Server but we rarely go over 135,000 hits in one day. Soon we expect to start adding zeros to that and I've been asked to help "pick a product"

Does anyone here manage a database that has very high access rate?

My head is always buried in VFP and SQLServer and I have no knowledge of other products.
