If I remember the stats correctly, nearly 40% of depression patients react positively and fast to antidepressiva (which I equate with the neurochemical illness you metnioned). Between 10 and 20 percent report positive change, but continue to have problems. So I'd formulate less forceful, but trying out antidepressiva makes still a lot of sense if somebody has problems in that area.
