Two points I thought I'd bring up. Differences in speed could have an impact here. What is occuring in your code immediately prior to issuing the ERASE command?
Also, if the cause of the file access problem cannot be rooted out, you could always trap for the error, and issue the command a second time. You have probably thought of this already. :)
