Tim,
You may wish to look into the WCF. Any book on it will tell you how to create services and there is a ton of information on security included. there are 3 good books on it by: Michele Bustamante, Juval Lowy, and Chris Bowen
http://www.amazon.com/Learning-WCF-Hands-Michele-Bustamante/dp/0596101627http://www.amazon.co.uk/Programming-WCF-Services-Juval-Lowy/dp/0596526997http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_b?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=chris+bowen+wcfI think you will be better served by learning WCF rather than wasting time on technology that has been replaced.
