Our youngest does it like this: get the hair wet, put a solution of two tablespoons baking soda in a glass of water on it, rub it a bit, rinse, same proportion of vinegar/water, rinse. Her hair looks great.

I use a different trick: my wife started making soap as a once-in-a-while hobby, and her recipe soap actually works great - no itch, no problem, feels great, washes away easily, none of those that just won't wash away, it just works. And it feels much better.
