A former employee with the Robeson County pretrial release program has been charged with sexual misconduct by a custodian and crimes against nature, according to authorities.

Hollis Britt was arrested Thursday afternoon by agents with the State Bureau of Investigation and members of the Lumberton Police Department. He was released later that day on a $20,000 bond.

Hollis Britt, 61, was hired as a pretrial response officer at the Robeson County Offender Resource Center in March 2006. His duties included supervising house-arrest clients, responding to violations and preparing orders for arrest, maintaining records and scheduling electronic house-arrest clients, and retrieving inmates from jailers to set up electronic house arrest.

Hollis Britt, a former trooper with the state Highway Patrol, previously served time for voluntary manslaughter. He pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter in March 1980 in the shooting death of his wife, Marian Stewart Britt. He served two years of his 20-year sentence. He received early parole in April 1982 because of an administrative error.

Britt was initially charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of his wife. She died of a gunshot wound to the head Oct. 19, 1979. The shooting happened in the bedroom of their home in Lillington.

He claimed in court that he did not remember shooting his wife. Hollis Britt told an SBI agent that he was arguing with his wife. She said something that made him angry. He pulled his revolver out of a dresser drawer, and the last thing he could remember was throwing his arm around to the left as the gun went off. The couple had been married for eight months. Britt was 33 at the time, and his wife was 28.
