>Do not set Buffer mode in the data environment at all. Set it to 5 when the data has to be modified by the user and re-set it back to 1 after the change is saved/cancelled and =TABLEUPDATE()/TABLEREVERT() was issued.

Why? That just adds another layer of complication.
