Now I know I'm younger than you because my first salary was $15,000 a year. Whoo boy! There were many new college grads at the time who made less.
Then I had to start paying bills with it <g>. Payroll was once a month and my personal measure of progress was how close to the end of the month the money ran out. No credit cards, so at that point I ate PB&J and whatever else was on hand until the check arrived. When that got down to only a day or two I knew I was getting somewhere.
I don't think it did me any harm.
