The TreeView is quite slow to load, but the classes I showed use delayed loading: the child nodes of a parent are only loaded when you expand the parent the first time. As a result, the TreeView doesn't waste time loading nodes the user may not see. I use something like this for the Stonefield Query Configuration Utility and it loads a 40,000 record tree in just a few seconds because it only loads the top-level nodes.
But you're right -- this interface isn't for every kind of application. It's specific for when you want an Explorer-style UI.
